Greensburg Holiday Parade

The Greensburg parade really puts focus on bringing the community together.  People of all ages have been coming together, forming groups and creating a Christmas theme of their choosing to be a part of this parade for 27 years. This year the parade will begin Saturday the 17th at noon. It starts at North Main Street near the museum, which is newly remodeled and holds various events of it’s own that are worth checking out.  It ends at the corner of South Main and Fourth Street, near City Hall.  You will notice that the traffic will start being redirected at 10:45 until after the parade is over. Typically you can expect the parade lasts anywhere from one to two hours.  Even at two hours you won’t loose interest. Parking can be found throughout the city.  About 8000 people attend but the parade and the route gives plenty of room for everyone to get a front row spot.

The school marching bands, characters such as the Perogies & Pirate Parrot, various classic cars, several dance studios do performances and even the lamas are dressed in their Christmas best.  Even real life ducks participated last year.  Those are just a few, amongst the many, that you can expect to see spreading Christmas cheer as they make their way down Main Street.  Make sure to bring a bag for all of the candy that the parade participants throw on their way by.  The first year that we went we didn’t know any better and our pockets were stuffed full within the first 15 minutes. I know that more candy is just what we all need so bring a bag!  I’ve been told there is a church in town that offers cookies and hot cocoa to the public. Rain or shine make sure you stay put so you can wave to Santa who saves his debut until the very end.

My own children look forward to this particular parade year after year.  Not even the cold and heavy rain could keep them away.  The parade always goes on and since being completely soaked our first year, we have learned to dress appropriately.  We always see friendly faces and it is such a great kickoff to the season.  Be sure to mark it on your calendars, it’s always the weekend before Thanksgiving.  We know you’ll enjoy it just as much as we do.
